Monterey, California

Last week we went on a vacation to Monterey, California. I don't remember when the last trip we took together, outside of work, was. It's been a long time.

The weather wasn't ideal but it was better than here and really wasn't that bad. For some reason 55 degrees felt a lot warmer in California than North Dakota.

The first day we went to the Laguna Seca golf course. Tim took a golf lesson and I went to the driving range. My hands were sore after hitting my bucket of balls.

Next we headed over to the Del Monte course and golfed 18 holes. The weather was perfect!

That evening we went down to Fisherman's Wharf for supper. I love crab legs so I decided to try the dungeness crab, it was good but I've decided I like snow crab legs better.

After dinner we walked along the shore down to the shops, restaurants and bars of Cannery Row.

The next morning we woke up to rain so decided to go out for a drive and see some of the sights and scenery.

The Links at Spanish Bay golf course

The Lone Cypress Tree

Pebble Beach 18th green

Pebble Beach Pro Shop
By the afternoon it had stopped raining so we went to the Bayonet Blackhorse course and golfed another 18 holes.

The course was beautiful but there was WAY too much sand!

Day three, it rained all day. Perfect day for drinking wine! We drove to Carmel valley and toured the Chateau St. Julien winery. I was looking forward to visiting a winery during our trip and seeing the vineyards. The tour guide was fun and gave us a lot of information.

After the tour we went to Carmel by the Sea and drove along the coast looking at all the neat cottages.

It was a great trip We both decided we definitely go back!

Spring Planting

Look what arrived in the mail today! Our Gurney's seed order!

Last summer was the first in a few years that I didn't plant a garden. After taking the year off I found I missed it.

This is the first year I've started plants from seeds. I planted the roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, sweet onions and gourds in small starter containers and placed them in the south facing window.

The corn, pumpkins, carrots, parsnips and green bean seeds will go right into the garden this spring.

Next to arrive is the dwarf banana tree. This will have to stay in the house though...bananas aren't exactly native to North Dakota.

Seafood Sale!

Our local grocery store had an outdoor seafood sale today. They had salmon, crab cakes, frog legs, mahi mahi...all sorts of things you usually can't find in town. I purchased some shrimp, scallops and king crab legs. The shrimp were huge! We had them for supper tonight and I used this Zippy Summer Shrimp recipe. I served it with buttery garlic vermicelli and stir fry vegetables, it was delicious!

Jake and Tim participated in a basketball program organized by the park board this winter. Jake as a player and Tim as a coach. It's a great program that teaches kids the basics of the game. The kids were able to play during half-time of a recent game. It was so fun to watch them and I look forward to many more years of being a basketball mom!
